Hobart Hurricanes will take on the Sydney Sixers in Match 5 of the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League (BBL 2023-24). The Hurricanes play host to their Sydney counterparts at the North Tasmania Cricket Association Ground in Launceston on Monday (December 11). 

While the Sixers strive to continue with the winning momentum after clinching a comprehensive victory over Melbourne Renegades in their opening match, the Hurricanes hope to start off their campaign on a high note at home turf. It should be a riveting clash for supremacy.

The Hurricanes will depend a lot on their experienced players, including their new skipper Nathan Ellis, who takes over from the experienced wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade, alongside the swashbuckling Tim David as well as key pacers Billy Stanlake, Riley Meredith and Chris Jordan. 

Having led the Hurricanes on two previous occasions in the absence of Wade, Ellis takes over on a full-time basis as a mark of his bolstering stocks within the club's set-up. The young Australian cricketer had also combined forces with Wade, the stand-in Australian T20I captain, during the recent series in India. 

The Hurricanes are hoping for a fresh start after going down heavily in the previous edition of the BBL where they managed just six wins in 14 matches of the league stage and finished sixth in the eight-team points table.

Sydney Sixers

With their stalwarts Steve Smith and skipper Moises Henriques rising up to the task, the Sixers managed to suppress the Renegades' threat in their opening encounter. The three-time BBL champions made a valiant start to their new campaign with an eight-run victory in the thriller versus the Melbourne-based side.

While Smith carried on from where he left in the last season and produced a match-winning knock of 61 off 42 balls, Henriques' blitz worth 40 off 32 balls helped the Sixers elevate their score to 175/6 in 20 overs. 

Later on, left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshius (3/36) and experienced spinner Steve O'Keefe (1/29) combined forces on the bowling front and restricted the Renegades to 167/7. 

The Sixers would believe they can replicate their impressive allround display when they step on the Tasmanian shores to face off against a Hurricanes outfit desperate for resurgence after a torrid last season.
