Hurricanes stay alive with a narrow win over Heat

Hobart Hurricanes keep their qualification hopes alive with a close-fought 2-run victory over Brisbane Heat on Wednesday.

Tim David held his nerves with the ball as Hurricanes continue to see a glimmer of hope. Hurricanes now need Melbourne Stars to beat Sydney Thunder for their chances to stay alive in the tournament.

Macalister Wright with the rescue act

Nothing went right for the Hurricanes as they lost two wickets in quick successions and were staring down the defeat.

This is when Macalister Wright puts his hand up and decided to be the main man for the Hurricanes. Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals, but Wright stood firm on one end.

Hurricanes have one of the most explosive batting order, at-least on paper, but they have continued to falter throughout the tournament. It is fair to say that with all the experienced batter failing, Wright saved the Hurricanes from embarrassment and played a gritty run-a-ball 56 after a careful start.

Thanks to his exploits, Hurricanes crossed the 120-run mark, which certainly looked an easy total to chase at the break.

Heat fall apart

What was supposed to be an easy chase, turned out to be a see-saw battle as Hurricanes showed their fighting spirit and kept on churning wickets at regular intervals.

Heat struggled early, but Jimmy Peirson and Sam Hain provided the rescue act and took the game to the wire. Hain showed his toughness when he copped a blow from Meredith, but stood his ground firm.

However, a lapse in concentration cost him his wicket and the batter was dismissed for a scratchy 26.

On a two-paced wicket, Heat were well on the course to chase down the total. At one stage, they were 103 for 4 in the 17th over. But Nathan Ellis and Riley Meredith brought the Hurricanes back in the contest as Heat made a mess of the chase and eventually lost the game by 2 runs.
