Bangladesh achieved a historic Test victory in the West Indies on December 4, 2024, after 15 years. They secured their first Test win in the Caribbean since their 2-0 sweep over a weakened West Indies team in 2009. In the second Test at Sabina Park, Bangladesh first gained an 18-run lead in the first innings, and then extended it to a commanding 211 runs by day three. The visitors ultimately won by 101 runs, levelling the series 1-1.
This victory was a massive comeback after their heavy defeat in the first Test in Antigua, and it was their third away win in 2024, their most in a calendar year.
Taijul Islam's 5-Wicket Haul Guides Bangladesh to Win
Taijul Islam played a key role in Bangladesh's success. The left-arm spinner scalped five wickets for 50 runs in the West Indies’ second innings. Islam also leaded the attack and recorded his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Meanwhile, Jaker Ali contributed a brilliant knock of 91 runs off 106 balls in Bangladesh's second innings. His counter-attacking approach lifted the them to a total of 268 all out. Nahid Rana also played a significant part in the win, where he took his maiden five-wicket haul in Test. His efforts in the second innings, along with the contributions from star players Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, helped bundle out the West Indies for just 185 runs, sealing Bangladesh's 101-run victory.
Despite a strong start from the West Indies, with captain Kraigg Brathwaite playing an adventurous knock and Kavem Hodge top-scoring with 55, they lost wickets regularly. Taijul, Rana, and the seamers took full advantage of the conditions, reducing the West Indies to just 50 overs in their chase.
This victory not only gave them their first Test win in the West Indies in over a decade but also marked a positive end to a challenging series.
