Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey survived a couple of close appeals, first to Jofra Archer and then to Josh Tongue on Day 1 of the third Ashes 2025-26 Test at the Adelaide Oval. The lower-order batter made the most of his reprieves and raced to an electrifying century at a breakneck pace to lead Australia’s recovery.

During the second close call of the day involving Carey, the English players were seemingly ‘convinced’ that the Australian keeper had nicked the ball towards visiting stumper Jamie Smith. However, after going upstairs upon on-field umpire’s initial refusal, the television umpire also refused to cave into England’s apparent confidence and overenthusiasm.

Some noise, a small spike but Alex Carey survives

A controversy erupted during the 63rd over of the Australian first innings on Day 1 of the third Ashes 2025-26 Test in Adelaide. The moment in contention refers to a close caught-behind appeal involving England’s fast bowler Josh Tongue, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and Australia’s well-set batter Alex Carey.

At a time when Carey reached 72* off 111 balls, the Australian batter had a go at Tongue outside his off-stump, only to miss the ball with Smith collecting it behind the stumps. A huge appeal ensued, with nearly all England players believing that the Australian batter had nicked the ball. The Australian on-air commentators also perceived a hint of noise at the point of apparent impact.

With on-field umpire Ahsan Raza adjudging ‘not out’, Ben Stokes and co. challenged the decision by going upstairs. While television replays indicated a small spike, there seemed a clear gap between bat and ball, prompting the third umpire to uphold the on-field umpire’s decision.

The decision, as one can expect, did not went down well with the English players as they were seemingly left flabbergasted over Alex Carey’s close call.

Nonetheless, Carey notched up a century to race Australia past the 300-run mark to put the pressure back on the England bowlers despite early Australian wickets.
