In what turned out to be a convincing game, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by 18 runs in the fourth match of the T20I Tri-series, 2025, at Sharjah. However, despite losing their 9th wicket on 111, the last stand for Pakistan only delayed the victory, but couldn't avoid it.
Haris Rauf Stitch 40-Run Partnership With Sufiyan Muqeem
The game was completely in favour of the Afghanistan side, who dismissed nine of the Pakistan batters when the Pakistan side only had 111 runs on the board. Fazalhaq Farooqi, skipper Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Noor Ahmad picked two wickets apiece, as Pakistani captain Salman Agha was run out.
With victory definitely out of their grasp, as they required a target of 170, and 59 more runs needed, it was only inevitable that Afghanistan would win this encounter.
However, with the last wicket remaining, the 10th and 11th number batters, Haris Rauf and Sufiyan Muqeem at the crease, Pakistan survived and avoided the embarrassment of getting all out, as they went on to score 151 after the end of the 20 overs without losing their 10th wicket.
Haris Rauf played a blistering 34-run not-out knock off just 16 deliveries, where he smashed four maximums at a strike rate of 212.50, emerging as a top scorer for his side. At the same time, he was partnered by Muqeem, who also remained unbeaten on seven after facing six balls with a boundary to his name.
From 111-9 to 151-9, the Pakistani duo staged a 40-run unbeaten stand for the final wicket, as they only lost in the end by 18 runs. The Afghan bowlers failed to pick up the last wicket, while Rauf went berserk with the bat.
Interestingly, this was the highest ever partnership for a Pakistani team in T20I cricket for the 10th wicket, where they have outlasted the 31-run not-out stand between Shoaib Akhtar and Wahab Riaz against New Zealand in Auckland in the year 2010.

31* | Shoaib Akhtar & Wahab Riaz | New Zealand | Auckland | 2010 |

Afghanistan Rock Pakistan By 18 Runs In Sharjah
Earlier in the day, the Afghanistan side batted first and put up an above-par total of 169 runs on the board, losing five wickets on the way after the end of the 20 overs, where Ibrahim Zadran scored a 65-run knock off 45 deliveries, while Sediqullah Atal scored 64 off 45 balls, taking their team to a decent total.
Faheem Ashraf was the pick of the bowlers for the Pakistan side with figures of four for 27 in his four overs, while Saim Ayub was highly economical, giving away just 18 runs in his four overs.
Chasing 170 for victory, the Pakistan side lost their batters one after the other without being able to stitch a confident, match-turning partnership. Fakhar Zaman from the top order was the highest scorer with 25, while Salman Ali Agha, the skipper of the Pakistan team, could only manage 20.
Later, Rauf's blitz of 34 not out helped save Pakistan from further embarrassment, as they only delayed the victory but couldn't eventually avoid it, as Afghanistan registered their second win of the series. Three matches in, and they now stand at the top of the table, with Pakistan being second.
