Quinton de Kock scored a 150 as South Africa won by 149 runs (Image source: X.com)
SA VS BAN: South Africa bulldoze Bangladesh; Win by 149 runs.
Another day, another South Africa win. They move to second place on the points table. They have now four victories in the ongoing World Cup with their every win having a margin of over 100 runs.
On the other hand, Bangladesh have lost four games on the trot. Their semi-final chances have already faded away.
This brings us to the end of the coverage for this match's live blog. We will be back again tomorrow as the World Cup caravan continues to roll over. Until then, good bye!
SOUTH AFRICA WIN!
It's all over. The World Cup debutant Williams takes the final wicket as South Africa end up winning the match by 149 runs.
Coetzee finally breaks the partnership!
Mahmudullah departs. He mistimes a shot to long-off fielder. Nonetheless, it was a brilliant knock.
CENTURY FOR MAHMUDULLAH!
It's not been a smooth sailing for Bangladesh but Mahmudullah stands tall. A hundred he would cherish for the rest of his life.
Mahmudullah smashes a six that takes him to 96. He is one hit away from that elusive three figure-mark.
Mahmudullah moves to 89. Hundred loading...
OUT ON NO BALL!
Mahmudullah's catch gets taken on a delivery which gets called a waist height no-ball.
Mahmudullah eyeing a century!
Mahmudullah is batting on 81 and has a chance of achieving a hundred.
DROPPED!
Mahmudullah survives a catch. Williams while running backwards made a mess of it. Jansen could have had the last laugh.
Miller too seems bored!
8th one down!!!
Mahmud gets early on the shot and lofts the ball into the sky. Coetzee takes a neat catch as Rabada bags another wicket.
Mahmudullah shifting gears!
Mahmudullah is teeing off. But unfortunately for Bangladesh, it's all for the NRR now.
Some words exchanged between him and Jansen. Will this is spice up this contest?
50 FOR MAHMUDULLAH!
If you would ask Bangladesh about a positive they could take out from this innings, Mahmudullah's valiant knock will be the only one.
Mahmudullah is nearing his half-century. He is the only Bangladeshi batter who has displayed some fight in this innings.
Another DRS for LBW. South Africa opts for it this time. Hasan Mahmud is the batter in question. The ball is pitching outside leg and it's not out.
Another wicket for Coetzee!
After getting smashed for two boundaries, Coetzee makes a comeback and deceives Nasum Ahmed with extra pace who gets late on the pull shot and top-edges the ball as the pacer claims a caught and bowled.
IND - WINNER, SA - RUNNER-UP. What do you think?
100 UP FOR BANGLADESH!
The team has taken 26.3 overs to breach the 100-run mark on a pitch where their opposition scored 382 runs. Let that sink in.
We are half-way through the innings and it has been painstaking to see Bangladesh bat. Forget about the runs, they are lagging behind in intent. South Africa, please end this soon!
Mehidy picks the fielder at square-leg!!!
Mehidy plays a slog sweep. There was a fielder set there exactly for that shot. Maharaj dismisses him. Every South African bowler who has bowled today has taken at least a wicket.
Nothing much is happening. Bangladesh are happy taking singles. It seems like Mehidy and Mahmudullah are practicing for the upcoming games.
DRS saves Mehidy Hasan Miraz. He was given LBW but the ball had pitched outside the leg stump.
Wake up, wake up Bangladesh. Do something. On a serious note, the most they can do now is to play for the NRR.
Bangladesh or a pack of a cards?
You cannot keep Rabada out of action for long. He makes his mark in the wickets tally. Litton gets trapped in front of the stumps as the ball hits his pad leading to an LBW.
South Africa are looking unstoppable. There is not much to see forward to in terms of result of this match as Bangladesh are staring at an inevitable. But South Africa, WOAH! They have played like a force, barring the Netherlands game.
Gerald Coetzee roars!!!
Bangladesh go further down in the hole. Mushfiqur Rahim cuts the ball straight to the deep-third man fielder as Bangladesh lost their fourth wicket.
Batting powerplay ends!
South Africa have already sealed this game if they hadn't after the end of the first innings. It also has to do with how poorly Bangladesh has batted as their batters got dismissed on deliveries which were not want wicket-taking by any stretch of imagination.
Debut World Cup wicket for Williams!!!
Shakib Al Hasan is shown the walking paper by Williams. He pokes at a delivery angling away from him and edges it to Klaasen who takes his third catch in the innings.
Double-strike for Jansen!!!
Two in two for the left-armer. Najmul Hossain Shanto departs for a golden duck. It was nothing delivery really but Shanto flicked it off his bad straight to the wicket-keeper.
Jansen draws first blood!
Tanzid was looking out of sorts and Jansen finally ends his misery at the crease.
Lots of plays and misses. Jansen is troubling the batters bowling at testing line and lengths. Half of the powerplay is done abd Bangladesh are showing no signs of urgency.
Bangladeshi batters are finding it difficult to pierce the ball into the gaps. Jansen and Williams are bowling according to the set field.
Another decent over for South Africa. Litton Das gathers a boundary but Lizaad Williams starts off well on his World Cup debut.
Klaasen dons the gloves!
It's Klaasen who is keeping the wickets as de Kock is not on the fold. We have been told he is experiencing cramps.
Jansen keeps Tanzid at bay as just two runs come off the first over.
Gear up for the run-chase!
South African players are ready and have taken their positions on the field. Marco Jansen will open the bowling. Bangladesh openers Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan are at the crease.
It's not just another run-chase for Bangladesh. If they fail in their task, it would probably end all their chances of proceeding to the semis.
South Africa punish the Tigers!
South Africa's calculative assault has taken their score to 382/5. The carnage started from Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram, and it continued with Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller towards the end. QDK scored a brilliant century, and Klaasen barely missed out on his successive ton. This will take some hitting from Bangladesh to chase this total down. They need to bat out of their skins to make a match out of it.
KLAASEN DEPARTS! WANKHEDE SILENT!
Klaasen can't believe it. He missed out on a deserving century by 10 runs. A phenomenal effort and Wankhede crowd gives him a deserving standing ovation. And yes, he deserves it.
Fifty partnership in 20 balls between Miller and Klaasen!
Geez, this is brute batting from the two power-houses. Where do you bowl to these guys? There is no place safe at the moment.
Klaasen nearing yet another hundred!
He is dealing in sixes at the moment. Sixes are raining left, right and centre. This is carnage, pure carnage from the Proteas batter. Plus, Bangladesh' poor bowling is also helping his cause. Bowling full tosses after full tosses.
Oh, Quinny Falls for magnificent 174!!!
No Double hundred for the Southpaw today, but the man has played a knock to remember here. He looked all set to become the first South Africa to score double century but departs in a bid to hit another one over the fence.
This was the knock of highest quality and he is surely making his last ODI tournament a memorable one. A big standing ovation from Wankhede and his teammates and one gets the feeling that there many more special knocks to come from Quinny in this World Cup.
Madness
Stop what you are doing and watch QDK and Klaasen tear away the Bangladesh attack. This is some hitting by the South African duo. With 6 overs left, South Africa will be aiming for 70-80 more runs.
It's raining fours and sixes at Wankhede! Bangladesh bowlers have nowhere to hide. Quinton de Kock has taken Shakib Al Hasan to the cleaners. With a scintillating six, QDK brings up his 150 as well. What a batter, QDK!!
350 on the cards!
South African side have the tendency to go ballistic in the last 10 overs. They have two set batters at the crease and still Miller and Jansen to follow. Anything less than 350 will be a disappointing total from here on.
Klaasen is the best middle-order batter in the world at the moment. He plays with authority and aggression and that makes him a dangerous batter. Another smoking innings on the way...
Another stats on your way!
Quinton de Kock has now converted each of his FIVE FIFTY-PLUS scores into 100s in ODIs in India.
Stat attack!
QDK is the youngest South African to 20 ODI hundreds. A phenomenal achievement by a phenomenal player.
Hundred for Quinton de Kock!! What a player!
The World Cup 2023 belongs to this man, Quinton de Kock! His third hundred of this World Cup and there is a sense of calmness when he plays. Another terrific knock and the joy on his face tells the entire story. He is jubilant!
AAAAAND MARKRAM DEPARTS!
Just when everything went according to the plan, Markram has to walk back to the pavilion. A clever tossed up ball by Shakib and Markram loses his shape as he holds out to the man at long-off. A completely mis-timed shot and the right-handed batter looks dejected.
Hundred loading for QDK?
He already has two hundreds under his belt, but de Kock has every chance to score his third hundred of the tournament.
100 partnership up!
A single to achieve the landmark. The runs have come in just 108 deliveries as the two batters look to press on the accelerator. Bangladesh somehow, someway need to get a couple of quick wickets.
Partnership brewing up!
QDK and Aiden Markram have finally found their groove. South Africa lost two early wickets, but the batting duo have added 85 runs so far, and this is a dangerous sign for Bangladesh, who desperately need a breakthrough.
A cautious approach from SA!
20 overs are done and dusted and South Africa have accumulated 99 runs. They are going at 4.95 runs per over and will be eager to up the ante in the next few overs.
FIFTY FOR QUINNY!!!
Quinton de Kock smashes his 31st half century. Another terrific innings from the South African superstar. Can he get to his third World Cup 2023 hundred today?
Stat attack!
Both the teams have collided 4 times against each other in 50-over World Cup, and have won two matches each. So South Africa have to be vary of the Bangladesh threat.
Shakib's incoming has certainly made a difference for the Tigers. He has rotated his bowlers really well and has perfectly used Mehidy Miraz till now. Another breakthrough and Bangladesh will be right on top of the Proteas.
Is the wicket two paced?
On second thoughts, this Wankhede track does look a bit tacky. The ball is holding onto the surface and the Proteas batters are not finding it easy at the moment. Maybe this isn't your typical 350-400 run wicket.
Mehidy Miraz strikes now! Proteas in trouble!
The ball kept low as Van der Dussen was pushed on the back-foot. The ball copped a blow on the front leg. The batter though about taking a review, but decides against it. A dream start for Bangladesh.
Shoriful strikes!!!
A pearler to end Reeza Hendricks' innings. Boy, Bangladesh needed a wicket and they have got it from Shoriful. Length ball that nipped back in sharply and beats the bat-pad gap to knock over the stumps. A nice little dance move from the bowler after getting the wicket.
Bangladesh doing Bangladesh things!
A couple of misfields and the Proteas batters won't mind that at all. The Tigers need to be sharp in the field.
Interesting tactics from Bangladesh to deploy spinner from one end. South African batters love pace on the ball and this will certainly frustrate them a bit. Can Bangladesh snatch an early wicket?
Another high-scoring contest loading?
As expected, the wicket looks like a belter and South Africa do have the firepower to take down any attack. Last time the Proteas played at Wankhede, which was a few days ago against England, they nearly scored 400. Can they break the barrier today?
Bangladesh playing XI
Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah Riyad, Shakib Al Hasan (c), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Mohammad Shoriful Islam
South Africa playing XI
Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram (c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lizaad Williams
No Towhid Hridoy for Bangladesh as Shakib replaces him.
Toss updates!
Well, fasten your seat belts folks. South Africa have won the toss and stand-in skipper, Aiden Markram has elected to bat first. Another 400 loading?
Its official! Temba set to miss today's clash. However, some good news for the Tigers - Shakib is making his comeback after an injury layoff.
NO SIGN OF TEMBA BAVUMA 😲
As per sources, there is no sign of captain Temba Bavuma during warm-ups at the Wankhede Stadium. #SAvBAN
Will the Captain stay out of action today as well??
SA vs BAN Weather Report
According to AccuWeather, the weather in Mumbai is looking good for the game, with no rain in the forecast. Expect partially cloudy conditions and temperatures fluctuating between 32°C and 34°C. Humidity levels are estimated at about 52%, and the wind is set to blow at around 13 km/h. Captains are likely to field first after winning the toss keeping the dew factor in mind.
SA VS BAN: HEAD TO HEAD RECORD
When it comes to ODI cricket, South Africa has the edge in their head-to-head history with Bangladesh. Out of their 24 meetings, South Africa has come out on top with an 18-6 win-loss record.
Talking about their record in the ODI World Cup history, South Africa and Bangladesh have squared off four times. What's intriguing is that their World Cup rivalry is deadlocked at 2-2, despite South Africa's lead in their overall ODI matchups.
Team Preview Bangladesh
To stop the Proteas juggernaut, Bangladeshis will have to produce allround brilliance at the Wankhede. The Bangla Tigers haven't punched together as a unit, with their batting unit struggling to post strong totals on the board and their bowling unit lacking incisiveness and robust threat on good batting surfaces.
Their problems could well multifold on a flat batting beauty in the next match. It would require a herculean effort from Bangladesh to outperform the rampaging South African batters and for their bowling arsenal to stand up to the huge task.
They'll be boosted by the return of their skipper and premier allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, who needs to step up and perform in either skill to inspire the rest of the pack and help the team compete. A loss would nearly end Bangladesh's hopes with a month left in the tournament.
Team Preview South Africa
South Africa will be pleased to have their regular skipper Temba Bavuma returning in time for the Bangladesh clash. The top-order player and inspirational skipper had missed out on the England game with an injury. In his absence, stand-in skipper Aiden Markram did an impressive job at the helm of affairs.
Proteas belted the poor English attack for a massive 399/7 on a flat pitch at the Wankhede Stadium and crushed the vaunted opposition batting line-up for a paltry 170 all out in one of the biggest wins in World Cup history.
If ever the South Africans needed a NRR boost, they got one over the Englishmen. Now it's about their entire unit clicking together as they head deep into their World Cup campaign with the intention to further clear up their path towards the knock-outs stage.
Hello and Namaste! 🙏🏻
Welcome to OneCricket's live blog for today's World Cup clash as the South African unit meet with Al Hasan' Bangladesh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai this afternoon!
What would unfold today lies in the hands of the fate but all I know is we're still not over last night's phenomenal victory by Afghanistan.
