Virat Kohli doesn't owe 2027 to anyone! His legacy is a gift, privilege we take for granted

In Indian cricket, we have a strange habit. The moment a legend crosses 35, the chatter begins. “How long will he play?” “Will he make it to the next World Cup?” “Is this the beginning of the end?”

And now, almost every conversation about Virat Kohli seems to start and end with the same question - will he be there in the 2027 ODI World Cup?

But maybe that’s the wrong question.

Virat Kohli is a legend still in the present

Maybe, in all this noise about the future, we are forgetting the present. Maybe we are forgetting to simply sit back and enjoy what is right in front of our eyes.

A once-in-a-generation cricketer, still hungry, still sharp, still capable of turning an ordinary ODI or IPL match into a memory that will live for decades.

Kohli’s recent twin centuries against South Africa weren’t just runs on a scoreboard. They were reminders. Reminders of timing, discipline, passion, and an unmatched ability to solve problems under pressure.

At 37,  Virat Kohli isn’t playing just one format to prove people wrong. He is playing because he loves the game. And because somewhere deep inside, that fire has still not dimmed.

We talk about records and milestones. We compare him with Sachin Tendulkar. We throw around numbers. But the true greatness of Virat has never been only about statistics.

It’s in the way he chases a ball to the boundary like it is the first run of his career. It’s in the way his eyes light up after a boundary. It’s in the roar that leaves his chest when the moment matters.

We may not see this kind of intensity again for a long time. Yes. It won't happen for a while.

Virat Kohli is a privilege, not a project

Indian cricket has produced legends before, and it will produce more in the future. But every great is different. Tendulkar had serenity. Dhoni had calm.

Virat Kohli has fire. He brought a new culture of fitness, aggression, self-belief, and professionalism. He changed what young Indian cricketers believed was possible. That kind of impact doesn’t arrive every decade. Sometimes, it takes generations.

The obsession with 2027 World Cup misses the whole point. No one can predict what the next two years will look like.

Bodies change. Priorities change. Managements change. Cricket itself keeps evolving. Instead of trying to write the final chapter in advance, why not just read the page that is open right now?

Because one day, soon enough, Virat Kohli will walk away. There will be a final inning, a final roar, and a final raised bat.

And on that day, we will all wish for just one more cover drive, one more chase, and one more passionate celebration.

Greatness is not something you measure only at the end. It is something you experience in the moment. And right now, the moment is still ours.

We’re too busy worrying about goodbye to enjoy him now

So forget 2027 for a while.

Turn on the TV. Watch the stance. The trigger movement. The straight bat. The loud call of “NO” between the wickets. Watch a master doing what he has done better than almost anyone who has ever played the game.

Because when Virat Kohli finally does step away, Indian cricket will move on. It always does. But the silence left behind by his absence will be louder than any cheer.

And then we will realise that we didn’t just watch runs. We watched history living in real time.

Enjoy his greatness while it lasts. Enjoy till his final chapter is written.
