The unthinkable has happened. Arguably one of the best Test skippers of New Zealand, Kane Williamson has relinquished his position. From winning the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship, to playing a number of invaluable innings, Williamson leaves a lasting legacy behind.

Over the years Williamson has achieved a lot as the New Zealand Test skipper

  • The 32-year-old has won 22 of 40 Test matches in charge. He has registered eight draws and has suffered defeat in ten matches, to finish as New Zealand's most successful Test captain.
  • A lot of players crumble under pressure when given the captaincy reign. But that's not the case with the former skipper. He averages 57.43 as the Test skipper across six years and 65 innings, as compared to 49.23 when not leading the side.
  • Williamson has slammed 11 Test centuries as the captain, which is a NZ record in itself. Former skipper Stephen Fleming (8 centuries) and Brendon McCullum (6) are behind him.
  • Kiwi great Martin Crowe is the only other captain to average more than 50 for the Black Caps. Of all the players to lead their side in 40 plus Test matches, only Brian Lara (57.83), is ahead of Williamson with the right-hander edging the likes of Greg Chappell (55.38), Virat Kohli (54.80), and Imran Khan (52.34).

Not only his batting, but the world also admires his captaincy style, with the Kiwis lauded as one of the best Test units in the ongoing circuit. New Zealand's win loss ratio under his captaincy is 2.2, which is only battered by India's 2.4111 in the same six year period.

Williamson has taken New Zealand cricket to a different level and time has come for Southee to take the mantle and take it further up.
