It’s all set to go down at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Monday, January 20, 2025, as Australia Women square off with England Women in the opening T20I of the Women’s Ashes. After a comprehensive 3-0 clean sweep in the ODI series, Australia will look to carry their momentum into the shortest format, while England will look to bounce back and keep the Ashes alive.

Australia Women

Led by Alyssa Healy, Australia Women are brimming with confidence after an impeccable ODI series where they claimed all six points on offer. Ashleigh Gardner stole the show with her all-round brilliance, finishing as the leading run-scorer and the Player of the Series. With six more points up for grabs in the T20Is, the Aussies are eager to continue their dominance and possibly seal the Ashes before the Test match.

England Women

The story hasn’t been as rosy for England Women. It’s been a decade since they last won the Women’s Ashes, and this series is slipping through their fingers too. They need a win desperately. With players like Sophie Ecclestone, Amy Jones and Nat Sciver-Brunt showing glimpses of form, England will look to regroup, boost morale, and make a statement in the T20I opener as a win here could shift the momentum and set the stage for an electrifying Test match finale.

Sydney Cricket Ground Pitch Report For AU-W vs EN-W 1st T20I

The SCG surface has been batter friendly this season, especially during the BBL 2024-25. Four out of six matches saw teams post over 190 runs. The pitch is set to offer consistent bounce and pace which will allow batters to hit through the line with ease. Having said that said, pacers might get some assistance early with seam movement, and spinners could come into play as the game progresses. However, unless it’s a used pitch, expect the conditions to favoyr the batters. With dew being a potential factor, the team winning the toss will likely bowl first.

Top 3 Captain and Vice-Captain Choices For AU-W vs EN-W 1st T20I

1. Ashleigh Gardner

Ashleigh Gardner has been absolutely brilliant in the Women’s Ashes so far. The Aussie all-rounder owned the ODI series, bagging the Player of the Series award. She smashed 146 runs in just three games at an average of 73.00, and even cracked a stunning century. And it wasn’t just her batting that did the talking. Gardner also chipped in with 4 key wickets.

Whether she’s smashing it out of the park or bamboozling batters with her off-spin, Gardner is a total game-changer and England’s biggest headache heading into the T20Is. With form on her side, she is an ideal pick to be captain or vice-captain of your fantasy team.

2. Nat Sciver-Brunt

Nat Sciver-Brunt is England’s talisman and perhaps their best chance to salvage the Ashes. In the ODI series, she fought valiantly, scoring 115 runs in three matches at an average of 38.33. Her standout innings of 61 in the final ODI reminded everyone of her ability to anchor an innings. Sciver-Brunt isn’t just about batting, though.

She also chipped in with two wickets, showing her all-round value to the team. With a strike rate of 75.16, she was one of the few England batters who looked comfortable against Australia’s bowlers. If England hopes to turn the tide in the T20Is, Sciver-Brunt’s form with both bat and ball will be crucial and it makes her an apt choice for captain or vice-captain.

3. Alana King

Alana King was a nightmare for England’s batters in the ODI series. The leg-spinner was in sensational form, bagging 11 wickets in just three matches at an extraordinary average of 9.63. Her best figures of 5/46 showed her ability to completely decimate a batting lineup.

King’s economy rate of just 4.18 speaks volumes about her control and consistency. Her ability to tie the batters and pick wickets makes her one of Australia’s most valuable players heading into the T20I series. Thus, she is a great pick to be captain or vice captain.
