Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to Ravichandran Ashwin after the Indian off-spinner’s surprise retirement from international cricket. Ashwin decided to retire after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane, ending his remarkable 14-year career.
In a special letter, PM Modi expressed his surprise at Ashwin's decision, making a clever remark, "You bowled a carrom ball that bowled everyone." He acknowledged the unexpected nature of the retirement, particularly since fans were hoping for more of Ashwin's incredible performances.
The Prime Minister also praised R Ashwin for his extraordinary achievements and contributions to Indian cricket, which included taking 765 international wickets and becoming India's second-highest wicket-taker across all formats.
PM Modi reflected on Ashwin's impact, mentioning his memorable debut five-wicket haul, his key role in India’s 2011 World Cup win, and his vital contributions to the team during the Champions Trophy in 2013.
The Prime Minister also recalled a remarkable moment from the 2022 T20 World Cup, where Ashwin’s calm decision-making helped India secure a win against Pakistan. He praised Ashwin for his intelligence on and off the field, pointing out that his engineering background might have contributed to his meticulous approach.

Ashwin ended his international career with 106 Tests for India, taking 537 wickets and scoring 3,503 runs. He is the only Test cricketer to have taken over 500 wickets and scored six centuries in the longest format. Additionally, he claimed 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and 72 wickets in 65 T20Is for India.
