Carlos Alcaraz, the Spaniard Tennis player, defeated his arch-rival, Jannik Sinner, in the finals of the US Open in four sets. This win helped the 22-year-old reclaim the number one spot and also gave him his 6th Grand Slam title. A child prodigy, Alcaraz won his first major Grand Slam in 2022, and since then, the player has gone from strength to strength.
Whenever he plays, the explosive player reminds everyone of South African cricketer AB De Villiers. Tennis and Cricket are two different sports, but de Villiers and Alcaraz have plenty in common. Here are 4 similarities Alcaraz shares with the Alien, de Villiers.
Unorthodox play - a major similarity
AB De Villiers was known as Mr 360-degree for his extraordinary shot-making skills across the ground. For one single delivery, he had an array of shots and had the skills to dispatch the same delivery to different parts of the stadium. Bowlers often found it difficult to contain him since ABD was unorthodox in his approach.
Similarly, Alcaraz is unorthodox in his Tennis approach. He has the ability to seemingly hit winners from difficult angles, and just like ABD, can hit a ball in five different ways; the Spaniard is also known for having multiple shots for a single ball.
Athleticism and agility
AB De Villiers was known as one of the best fielders the game of cricket has ever seen, and the South African had the ability to take stunners due to his extremely high fitness standards. Similarly, Alcaraz is known for his agility, athleticism and the ability to turn defense into attack in the blink of an eye due to his extreme pace and fitness.
Two entertainers of their respective field
AB De Villiers might not have won a single ICC trophy with South Africa, but he was a thorough entertainer as the player had the ability to captivate the audience with his sheer shot-making skills, and in the blink of an eye, he could reach from 50 to 100 with audacious hitting.
Similarly, Alcaraz has that “wow” factor, as the Tennis audience adores him for his ability to play with a smile on his face, and his natural talent to play trick shots which have never been seen on a Tennis court.
Versatility
AB De Villiers was versatile in his cricketing approach. He was one of the few players who were equally good in Tests, ODIs, and T20I format. He could also keep wickets, which showcases his ability to do different things on a cricket field.
Similarly, Alcaraz is an all-surface Tennis player, and has excelled in Hard Court, Grass, and Clay Court, showcasing his ability to adjust according to the surface.
