WV Raman appointed as the batting consultant of Bengal cricket team

Former India cricketer WV Raman has been named as the new batting consultant of the Bengal team for the upcoming season.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) had to bring in the new coaching staff after Arun Lal tendered his resignation letter following the defeat to Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji semi-finals.

Raman will link up with the Bengal squad ahead of the start of the domestic season. He will work alongside the newly appointed head coach of the Bengal team, Laxmi Ratan Shukla

Raman agreed to put on the consultant’s hat: CAB

CAB confirmed the appointment of Raman in an official release. The board said Raman has accepted the offer and he will take over the job from VVS Laxman.

“The offer was accepted by WV Raman. The adaptability that both sides agreed to meant that he would participate in several camps, but he will not be available during the competition. Raman immediately agreed to put on the consultant’s hat when CAB president Avishek Dalmiya contacted to ask whether he is available” a senior Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official told PTI on Monday.

Raman, a former India, and Tamil Nadu opener had earlier served as Bengal’s head coach over two stints.

“WV Raman has held the position of Bengal’s head coach twice, and he is quite familiar with the setup. He will essentially take over for VVS Laxman, who oversaw Bengal’s Vision 20-20 program," the CAB release added.

The 57-year-old ex-cricketer held the position of the head coach of the India women’s cricket team until last year. During his tenure, the women's team reached the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia before going down to the hosts in the summit clash in 2020. Despite enjoying success, Raman's contract was not extended and Ramesh Powar was chosen to replace him as the coach.
