Who said Test cricket is dying? The World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 shut down that theory with a roar and surprisingly, a huge chunk of that noise came straight out of India.

Even without Team India in the final, Indian fans showed up in droves on TV screens, mobile phones and digital platforms like it was their own team out there at Lord’s.

India Shows Up in Record Numbers For WTC Final 2025

While South Africa and Australia were the ones locked in battle from June 11 to 14, the real win came from the stands and screens. As per official figures, 2.94 billion viewing minutes were recorded on Star Sports which made it the highest-rated and most-watched non-India Test match ever on the network.

The match also clocked a record reach of 47 million viewers across India. Digital didn’t stay behind either. The WTC Final 2025 raked in over 225 million views online, trumping even the highly anticipated India vs Australia WTC Final in 2023.

It wasn’t just the TV remotes that were hot. The action at Lord’s Cricket Ground was witnessed live by over 109,000 fans across four days. From the first ball to the last run chase, the crowd was electric.

Markram And Rabada Steal The Show

While the numbers told one story, the match itself told another. Aiden Markram led the charge with a stunning fourth-innings century: 136 runs of pure grit and class.

On the other end, Kagiso Rabada turned into a wrecking ball, grabbing nine wickets across the two innings. Their combined brilliance helped the Proteas chase down Australia and clinch the WTC title in a thriller.

Jay Shah Tips His Hat To Indian Fans

Even Jay Shah, the ICC Chairman, couldn't ignore the numbers coming out of India.

“The remarkable viewership numbers for the ICC World Test Championship Final, across both broadcast and digital platforms, are a powerful testament to the appeal of high-quality Test cricket,” he said.

And he wasn’t wrong. Fans tuned in from across India, regardless of the result, regardless of the teams. The love for the purest form of cricket is still alive and well and it’s not just riding on the back of nationalism anymore. It is about the contest, the format and the stories that unfold session by session.
