The T20 format has helped cricket spread its wings across global platforms. After witnessing the success of T20 Women's Cricket at the Commonwealth Games 2022, the Commonwealth Games Federation have decided to include the sport in the upcoming edition in 2026, hosted by Australia.

A total of 23 disciplines will be showcased in the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Victoria between 17 and 29 March across four venues — Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, and Gippsland.

Reintroduced in the Birmingham edition after Kuala Lumpur 1998, which hosted the 12-nation Men's 50-overs competition.

The 2022 edition — a six-nation T20 contest —  saw Australia clinch the gold medal by beating India in a close final at Edgbaston.

ICC General Manager, Cricket, Wasim Akram expressed his excitement about the growth of women's cricket.

“We are delighted to know that women’s cricket will be part of the Commonwealth Games in Victoria. It will be another significant landmark for the sport after its huge success in recent years, including Birmingham. The continued growth and upward trajectory of both the women’s game and T20 cricket fits perfectly with our long-term ambitions that include being part of the Olympic Games."

Australia earlier hosted the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in 2020.
