Smriti Mandhana made history during India's opening match of the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on October 4. Though Mandhana's personal contribution to India's failed run-chase was underwhelming, she achieved a major personal milestone.
India opened the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a tough loss against New Zealand on October 4. The Kiwis batted first to post a modest total of 160 runs and made India toil hard in the chase.
Rosemary Mair and Lea Tahuhu scalped 7 wickets combined to rattle India's deep batting lineup. Eventually, Harmanpreet Kaur's led side failed to recover from constant setbacks and were bowled out for mere 102 runs, leading to a 58-run margin defeat.
Smriti Mandhana crosses 3500 T20I runs mark
Meanwhile, India's dependable opener, Smriti Mandhana, departed early with just 12 runs off 13 balls. Despite her early dismissal, Smriti scaled a personal milestone to become the first Indian woman to reach 3,500 runs in T20Is. She joins New Zealand's Suzie Bates as the only other player to achieve this record in T20I cricket.
Most runs in Women's T20I for India
- Smriti Mandhana - 3505 runs
- Harmanpreet Kaur - 3441 runs
- Mithali Raj - 2364 runs
- Jemimah Rodrigues - 2087 runs
- Shafali Verma - 1950
Notably, Smriti Mandhana and Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur have been competing closely in the race for the highest run-getter in T20Is, with Harmanpreet just behind with 3441 runs, approaching her own milestone.
In terms of all-time records, Mandhana's consistency across formats is reflected in her place as the first Indian woman to surpass 3500 runs in both T20Is and ODIs.
India's qualification gets murkier with an early loss
India Women's 58-run loss to New Zealand has put their semi-final qualification in jeopardy. As per the present scenario, India must win their remaining Group A games against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and arch-nemesis Australia. Not only that, but the team also has to achieve huge margin victories to overcome the abysmal -2.900 NRR.
