The India-New Zealand match in the Women's T20 World Cup witnessed a heated controversy over a run-out decision involving New Zealand's Amelia Kerr. After the run-out was overturned, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur lashed out at umpires in a fierce clash.

India's start to the high-stake ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 was underwhelming as they lost the opening fixture against New Zealand by a huge margin of 58 runs. On top of that, a dead ball controversy put Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur in a bad spot amid a heated and stressful battle.

In the 14th over of New Zealand's innings, Indian players appealed for a run-out after a miscommunication led to Amelia Kerr's dismissal. However, the ball was declared dead, as the umpire at the bowler's end had already called the end of the over.

India-New Zealand clash hit by huge controversy!

The confusion led to a furious clash between Harmanpreet Kaur and the umpires, who stood firm on the dead ball call. Although Kerr was dismissed two balls later, the incident left many debating the interpretation of the Laws of Cricket.

As per clause 20.1 of Law 20, "The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler's end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play."

In this situation, as Kerr attempted a second run and India went for the run-out, the fact that the umpires declared the ball dead suggested that both sides may have stopped considering the ball in play, which is clearly inaccurate.

However, as per clause 20.6, "Once the ball is dead, no revoking of any decision can bring the ball back into play for that delivery."

Since the umpires had declared the ball dead, the run-out could not be re-evaluated, effectively closing the matter from a rules perspective. Hence, Kaur was left helpless, leading to frustration.

Harmanpreet Kaur admits flaws in big defeat to NZ

As India lost the Women's T20 World Cup opener against New Zealand by an embarrassing margin, captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that her team didn't produce quality cricket and were outclassed by a better side, i.e., New Zealand.

She, however, added that India is capable of chasing 160-170. But the lack of partnerships cost them in the previous game. Regardless, going forward, each game is important and Kaur backs her girls to come out stronger.
