Mohammad Rizwan notched up his 30th T20I half-century through the course of his 74-run knock against South Africa on Tuesday, December 10 at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. However, the Pakistani skipper brought up his 50th run off the 50th delivery of his innings to mark one of the slowest fifties ever by a mainstream batter in T20I cricket.

Rizwan’s glacially paced innings ended up costing Pakistan their series-opener to Proteas by 11 runs. Needless to say, the 32-year-old became a prime subject of some heavy trolling from online fans soon after Pakistan’s defeat.

Chasing 184, Pakistan captain and opening batter Mohammad Rizwan made 74 runs from 62 balls with five boundaries and three sixes. Maintaining a strike rate of just 119.35, Rizwan completed his half-century from 50 balls to mark one of the slowest-ever fifties by a captain in T20I cricket, surpassing Babar Azam’s 49-ball sluggish effort from 2021.

The wicketkeeper-batter was eventually dismissed by 18-year-old Kwena Maphaka in the final over of the innings as Pakistan fell 11 runs short of their target to go 0-1 down in the three-match series.

Soon after Pakistan’s defeat, a legion of fans took to X and made hilarious memes at the expense of the ‘Men in Green’ captain. While some fans jokingly compared Mohammad Rizwan’s intent to Test-level batting, others vented out their frustration on the senior man over the eventual outcome of the match. One particular fan even commented that Pakistan kept losing wickets from the other end because Rizwan’s ‘lack of intent’ kept increasing the asking rate.

Interestingly, none of the first-choice South African bowlers like Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen or Keshav Maharaj featured in the match owing to various reasons.

Nonetheless, the battered-and-bruised Pakistan team will now face South Africa in a must-win second T20I match at Centurion on December 13.
