WI vs IND | 1st ODI | Shreyas Iyer equals Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly in a rare feat

Team India defeated hosts West Indies by three runs in a nail-biter at the Queen's Park Oval last night to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Shreyas Iyer was among the three half-centurions for the 'Men in Blue' alongside openers Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan.

Iyer's innings also marked the 10th fifty of his ODI career, as he struck 54 and formed a crucial 94-run stand with the interim skipper for the second wicket.

Iyer equals Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly for a batting record in West Indies

Iyer's half-century in the opening match of the series meant that the cricketer charted three successive fifty-plus scores in the West Indies.

Back in August 2019, the right-hander plundered scores of 71 and 65 in consecutive innings, both at the Queen's Park Oval.

The cricketer now holds an elite batting record among Indians for ODIs in West Indies, equalling former captains Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli in registering three successive half-centuries in the Caribbean.

If the 27-year-old compiles another fifty in the next game, he will equal Ajinkya Rahane's four consecutive half-centuries in the West Indies.

Notably, he also surpassed Kohli and Dhawan to register the most 50-plus scores after the first 25 ODI innings among Indians.

Iyer's recent 54 in his 25th innings extends his tally to 11 scores of 50 or above. Navjot Singh Sidhu, with 12 such scores in his initial 25 matches, remains at the top of the list.
