‘300 was never in my wildest imagination' - Sam Northeast reflects on his knock against Leicestershire

Experienced English batter Sam Northeast slammed a scintillating triple hundred for Glamorgan in the County Championship encounter against Leicestershire yesterday.

Northeast, who was unbeaten on 50 at stumps on Day 2, smashed 258 more runs on the third day to attain this remarkable feat.

However, after stumps on Day 3, the Kent-born revealed that he hadn't imagined completing his triple century on the third day itself. He also said that getting 300 in a First-Class match was a dream come true achievement for him.

According to the ECB reporters network, Northeast said, “There were times when they bowled really well, and you had to ride that. I gave a chance on 96 but managed to survive that and battled for a bit. After that, I began to feel it was a situation where I could get to 200, but 300 was never in my wildest imagination and a dream come true in a lot of ways.”

Leicestershire posted a mammoth total of 584 runs in their first innings. So, avoiding the follow-on was the primary task for the visitors.

Northeast agreed to it and stressed that they chose to counterattack after taking their side past the follow-on target. He also admitted to being relieved on getting his maiden First-Class double ton in the process.

We were in a situation in the game where we needed to take time out of the game, to keep batting and get past the follow-on target, so that was my main priority, but, yes, the double hundred was a thing that needed ticking off in my career," Northeast said.

“I've made some big hundreds before without getting a double so there was a bit of relief to get over the line. Then, once we had avoided the follow-on, we were able to express ourselves and have a bit of fun at the end, and the runs kept flowing,” the stylish batter concluded.

Notably, Sam Northeast, batting on 324 at the time of writing, has set a new highest individual score by a Glamorgan player. He surpassed Steve James' 309* in this process.
