Rohit Sharma and his team faced a significant setback in 2024, suffering their second defeat of the year against New Zealand. In the first Test match of their series held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, India lost by 8 wickets. This defeat marked a historic moment as it was the first time in 36 years that New Zealand managed to win a Test match on Indian soil.

The Indian cricket team has established itself as a powerhouse on home soil, with only four Test losses since 2013. While teams like Australia and England have managed to secure a few victories in India over the years, they have not been able to win an entire series. Since 2012, India has maintained a remarkable record, making it extremely difficult for any visiting team to claim victory.

India's Last Defeat At Home In Test

However, in 2024, India experienced a rare home defeat. This loss came during the first Test of a five-match series against England. After winning the toss, England chose to bat first but struggled, posting only 246 runs. In response, India showcased their batting strength, scoring 420 runs and taking a solid lead of 174 runs.

Despite being in a tough position during their second innings, England found a hero in vice-captain Ollie Pope. He played a brilliant innings, scoring 196 runs and helping England reach a total of 436. This set India a challenging target of 231 runs to win the match. Many expected India to chase this target with ease, but debutant Tom Hartley had other plans.

After a disappointing first innings, Hartley came back strong, taking seven wickets in the second innings. His exceptional performance led England to a remarkable victory, marking only India's fourth home Test defeat since 2013.
