What is The IVPL 2023 About? How Will it Impact T20 Cricket in India?

Can there ever be a dull moment in a country, where cricket is perhaps almost a religion in itself, besides being a national obsession?

Can there just be one particular dominant headline from a nation that’s given birth- and is a home- to Sachin, Virat, Dhoni, Ganguly, Dravid, Zaheer, Sir Sunny and Gill?

You know about BCCI, but here comes BVCI

Truth is that while the revered BCCI is responsible for growing, cultivating and sustaining Indian cricket having taken it to heights that many cricket playing nations can only dream about, that there’s also another cricket board in place that perhaps isn’t talked about as much as it should be.

But truly speaking, there may not be a better time than now to highlight the Board for Veteran Cricketers in India, popularly known as the BVCI.

For had there been no BVCI, the board that promotes and furthers the cricket interest of those from the age of forty (in India), we would never have a brand new revolution that’s going to spice up the T20 revolution in the country.

Adding a new chapter to T20’s craze

Adding a fresh new dimension and new wave to T20 cricket, vastly recognised as the saviour of modern sport, the Board for Veteran Cricket in India has just announced the Indian Veteran Premier League or the IVPL.

A premier, twenty-over format league that is bound to involve veteran cricketers from across the Indian sub-continent and those from other popular cricket-playing nations, the IVPL promises great excitement, cut throat competitive cricket besides a ton of fanfare.

How many teams in IVPL 2023

A six-team format that includes sides from not only Delhi and Mumbai as well as Rajasthan, the IVPL 2023 shall also see a team each from Chhattisgarh, Telangana and interestingly, Ghaziabad, part of the Delhi NCR.

Not only have the jerseys for each of the six current franchises been unveiled, the talk of the town moment for the cricket league, under the auspices of the BVCI recently came at the Delhi-bound press conference that was attended by Chris Gayle himself.

When the universe boss fielded the media from the BVCI’s podium

Present at a star studded media event, where the plans regarding the forthcoming T20 league were announced were legends like Shri Madan Lal, respected India all rounder and an intricate force of the said board, Praveen Kumar, former India medium fast star bowler and Chris Gayle, six hitting machine, run making king and truly, the white ball superstar of West Indies and short form cricket.

It was here at the announcement of the IVPL 2023 league that Mr. Praveen Tyagi, the current supremo of the Board for Veteran Cricket in India emphasised on the importance of the contests.

Stating in no uncertain terms that the cricket series, slated to be held in Dehradun during November is a brand new occasion for a gaggle of cricketing talents to retake their position on the cricket field.

Those who had retired as well as those who were still inkling to represent the game having unbridled love and passion for the game will together be seen donning their respective jerseys come the wintery month of November.

But nothing could be, unarguably speaking, as interesting as the prospect of seeing some highly respected names such as Ross Taylor, JP Duminy, Sanath Jayasuriya, Suresh Raina, possibly even AB de Villiers and the universe boss Chris Gayle himself engage in the slugfest of supremacy that’s T20 cricket.

The way BVCI and its members, Shri Ravindra Tyagi (President- Veteran Cricket Association of UP), Mr. JK Mahindra (noted former Ranji player), Sudhir Kulkarni (current secretary, BVCI), Alok Saxena and other noted figures have been raising awareness and working tirelessly pushing for the cause of veteran cricket is perhaps no less important than the job of the actual few who happen to make headlines in and around a cricketing contest.

How will IVPL impact?

Delighted about the prospects of the forthcoming IVPL, whose auctions will soon take place in Mumbai during August, Mr. Tyagi highlighted that the BVCI is leaving no stone unturned and no aspiration unchecked in popularising cricket for the veteran athletes of our game.

“The series”, he would note, “is a great chance once again for domestic and international players to contest to their best and provide fresh entertainment and the strand of competitiveness that can only come from them.”

What could be expected ahead?

And somewhere this makes much sense given nowadays we aren’t strangers to the mushrooming of new T20 leagues cropping up everywhere; so why not have a league that once again showcases and promotes the talent of veteran cricketers?

As the culture of cricket grows along with the popularity of the International Veteran Premier League, it is expected that in the seasons to come, next year onwards post this 2023 league, the series could rope in more popular and groundbreaking names in the mix.

Dates

While they are subject to change, if any, the current dates for the IVPL are November 17-28, 2023.
