Australia has named their ‘A’ squad that will take on the English Lions in the four-day game in Brisbane, starting this Friday. Beau Webster and Jhye Richardson are among the six capped players who have made it to the squad. The match will be played at the Allan Border Field and will run alongside the second Ashes game.

Webster was a part of the Australian side for the first two Ashes games, but he did not feature in the Playing XI as Cameron Green regained full fitness to bowl. He was released from the squad to join the A side.

Meanwhile, Webster, Richardson, and other players are still in contention to make it to the Ashes squad for the remainder of the series. They will look to display a strong performance to make a strong case for their return.

Webster has had a stellar record in recent Sheffield Shield games. The all-rounder is only behind Cameron Bancroft (2,469), Peter Handscomb (2,323) and Hilton Cartwright (2,302) in terms of runs scored since the start of the 2022-23 season. He has scored 2051 runs in this period.

Australia hold a commanding lead in the Ashes

As for the Ashes, Australia had a great start to the series, winning the opening game in Perth on just the second day. Mitchell Starc’s masterclass with the ball in both innings and Travis Head’s unimaginably quick century in the second innings helped them comfortably seal the game and take the lead in the five-match series.

Head will continue opening in the second Test, since regular opener Usman Khawaja is out of contention. The 38-year-old was ruled out of the second game due to a back injury. He had also not participated in the first game, which meant Head opened in the second innings.
