We have to take this opportunity to bring smiles back: Rovman Powell

West Indies swashbuckler Rovman Powell believes that the current period of transition in Caribbean cricket is an ideal opportunity for players like him to nail down a permanent spot in the side and the right-hander intends to do just that.

Powell was in his full element on Sunday evening as he pulverized the Bangladeshi attack to the tune of an unbeaten 28-ball 61 in the 2nd T20I in Dominica to power the hosts to a match-winning score of 193/5.

With the likes of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Kieron Pollard walking in the sunset, it's a period of transition in West Indies white-ball cricket and Powell intends to make every opportunity count.

Speaking to the reporters after the match, Powell said:

"It is a change in the guard, to be honest. Our legends Chris Gayle, [Dwayne] Bravo, and [Kieron] Pollard sit back and let us youngsters come through. We have to take this opportunity to bring smiles back to the people of the Caribbean,”

One of the most fearsome hitters of a cricket ball in the current era, Powell smashed 6 sixes and a couple of 4s during his knock, which included as many as 23 runs from one over of Shakib Al Haan.

Powell revealed that it was an intentional ploy on his part as it was an ideal match-up for him in addition to the veteran spinner not having a good day at the office.

"We always sit in our batting meeting to talk about changing momentum and course of the game. I think that over today from Shakib did that for us. It is very, very important to pick match-ups and bowlers. I reckoned Shakib wasn't having the best of the days. I decided to go after him," he said.

"There was five overs of pace in the back-end. The platform was already set by the captain and Brandon, who both played well before I got to the crease. It was just an opportunity for me to advance the scoring. To bat all the overs," he added.

In response, Bangladesh came no way near to the target as they could only muster 158/6, with Shakib top-scoring with an unbeaten 52-ball 68.

Powell was eventually adjudged 'Player of the Match' for his performance and he will look to do an encore of it in the 3rd.
