Virat Kohli is geared up for his next assignment for India in Test cricket as the legend reached Hyderabad late on Saturday (January 20) night ahead of the opening Test of the five-match series versus England

The modern-day stalwart, who stands on the verge of a terrific milestone before the Test match starting Thursday (January 25), reached the Hyderabad airport to rejoin the Indian side following a brief gap from the T20I series versus Afghanistan.

Kohli is nine runs away from becoming only the third Indian batter in the history of Test cricket to have made 2,000 or more runs against the colonial rivals. The 35-year-old's tally stands at 1,991 runs from 28 Tests and 50 innings.

The great right-hander averages 42.36 versus the Three Lions with five centuries and nine half-centuries next to his name. Nine more runs will allow the Indian stalwart to join his inspiration Sachin Tendulkar and legend Sunil Gavaskar in the esteemed list.

Kohli could also become the joint highest century maker for Team India against England if he raises his bat twice during the upcoming five-match series. Tendulkar and current India head coach and batting great Rahul Dravid boast of seven hundreds apiece against the Englishmen.

The England series is critical for Kohli to help India thwart Ben Stokes and company's rising 'Bazball' threat and tactics. The Indian No.4 might have to encounter funky and non-traditional field settings as has been the case with England during the 'Bazball' era.

Kohli also had an ordinary run home and away the last time he faced England in 2021 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the return to normalcy, however, he has produced two centuries and was in tremendous form during the recent Test series in South Africa.
