Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand after suffering a fresh injury during a practice session in Vadodara.

The series is scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 11, but Pant will no longer be part of the squad after picking up a right-side strain with an internal oblique muscle tear.

The 28-year-old left-hander was injured on the eve of the first ODI while batting in the nets at the BCA B ground. He was facing throwdowns from a sidearm specialist when he was hit just above the waist by a sharp delivery.

The impact caused immediate discomfort, and Pant was seen grimacing in pain moments after being struck.

The star batter initially tried to stay on his feet but soon fell to his knees, clearly struggling with severe pain. The Indian team's support staff rushed to his aid and attended to him on the field before taking him away from the nets.

Gill, Gambhir under fire for cold reaction after Pant's injury

However, what caught the attention of fans was a video from the practice session that quickly went viral on social media. In the clip, Pant is seen kneeling on the ground in pain, while India’s captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir continued chatting in the background without checking on the injured player.

The visuals sparked massive outrage online, with fans criticising the apparent lack of concern shown towards Pant.

Before the injury, Pant had been batting fluently and spent nearly 50 minutes at the nets, looking well organised and confident. But the blow above the waist abruptly ended his session and eventually ruled him out of the series entirely.

Rishabh Pant's recovery timeline

A source close to the team confirmed the nature of the injury to the Times of India, saying, "He has been diagnosed with a right-sided strain with internal oblique muscle tear, and has thus been ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series against New Zealand."

Rishabh Pant is set to leave the Indian camp on Sunday and will report to the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru for further medical assessment and rehabilitation.

Reports suggest that Pant did not consult any local specialist in Vadodara and also did not undergo scans immediately after the incident. He is expected to remain under observation for several days before a clear recovery timeline is established.

Rishabh Pant's injury-prone career

Injuries have plagued Pant's career in recent years. In late 2022, he survived a horrific car accident that kept him away from international cricket for an extended period.

Just last year, he fractured his toe while attempting a reverse sweep against England, which forced him to miss the final Test of the series and the subsequent Tests against the West Indies.

Despite concerns over his form and fitness, Pant was retained in India's ODI squad as the second wicketkeeper-batter. He last played an ODI during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August 2024, and the New Zealand series was seen as an opportunity for him to re-establish himself in the 50-over format.

It is important to mention that with Pant ruled out, Dhruv Jurel has been named as his injury replacement for the ODI series.
