The atmosphere at Edgbaston was electric as Shabnim Ismail's last-minute hat-trick in Match 14 of The Hundred 2023 Women’s tournament became the focal point of a sensational clash, catapulting Welsh Fire Women to a stunning three-run win over Birmingham Phoenix Women.

Ismail's last-minute heroics sealed a win for Welsh Fire

Ismail displayed excellent composure during the climax and denied Phoenix the four runs they required from the final three balls. With Phoenix wrapping up at 134 for four, they painfully missed the target set by Welsh Fire, who posted a competitive 137 for seven.

While Ismail's three-wicket haul was the talk of the evening, Tammy Beaumont's magnificent 59 off 40 balls laid the foundation for Fire's innings. Phoenix, not to be overshadowed, showed strong intent, especially with Tess Flintoff's 55 and Amy Jones' unbeaten 48, drawing them ever closer to victory.

However, the day belonged to Ismail, who ended with figures of 3/31 in her 20 balls. With the pendulum swinging in Phoenix's favour, needing a mere nine off the last five balls, the South African pace dynamo’s heroics changed the game's trajectory.

Flintoff’s elegant boundary brought the requirement down to a gettable four off three, but Ismail responded with a game-changing hat-trick to create history.

Earlier, after choosing to field, Phoenix's bowlers faced resistance from Fire's openers, Beaumont and Hayley Matthews, who forged a robust 72-run partnership. Beaumont, in particular, showcased her class, hitting a majestic six en route to her quick half-century.

Phoenix’s chase was kicked off by Sophie Devine's brisk 29 off 19, but it was the Flintoff-Jones partnership that truly lit up the chase. However, in the end, it was Ismail's herculean effort and skill that stole the limelight, ensuring a thrilling climax to a match for the ages.

The outcome casts a shadow on Phoenix’s qualification hopes after a challenging start to the tournament. On the contrary, Welsh Fire remains undefeated, having clinched three wins in their first four games.
