England’s Under-19 batter Aaryan Sawant was dismissed in an unusual manner against South Africa on Day 3 of the unofficial Test match between the two sides at the Stellenbosch University. Batting at 11* and having faced 26 deliveries in the innings, Sawant slog-swept South African spinner Jason Rowles only for the ball to bounce back on to the stumps after hitting the helmet of a close-in fielder.
Sawant’s slog bolted straight towards Jorich Van Schalkwyk, an 18-year-old South African star who was stationed at short leg, and the ball hit back at the stumps precisely when the number four English batter was standing outside the crease.
South African fielder injured in accidental run out
South Africa Under-19 opener Jorich Van Schalkwyk accidentally run out England’s well-set batter Aaryan Sawant after the latter reached 11* from 26 balls. Stationed at short leg, Schalkwyk had the ball struck on to his helmet courtesy of Sawant’s slog sweep. As it turned out, the ball ricocheted back at the stumps to catch an off-guard Sawant inches away from his crease as England lost its third wicket upon reaching 106 runs in 30.4 overs.
As the English batter was making his way back to the pavilion, Schalkwyk unconsciously fell into the ground and was soon mobbed by his South African teammates.
The English Under-19 team eventually recovered from its unexpected setback to reach 275-8 by stumps on Day 3. Wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew belted a run-a-ball 71 to top score in the innings, as England stretched its lead to 255 runs.
Earlier in the match, England hauled 299 in their first innings courtesy of half-centuries from Farhan Ahmed and Jack Home. Muhammed Bulbulia and Jason Rowles also scored cracking 50s in response to ensure South Africa took a 20-run lead at the halfway stage of the match.
