Bangladesh is a cricket crazy nation and no matter which team plays against Bangladesh, we see passionate Bangla fans flooding the ground and cheering their team with all their might. The Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka is one of the most iconic grounds not only in Bangladesh and all over the world and is the home of Bangladesh cricket.

However, in the second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand, there was an incident which has been rarely seen in cricket stadium. The floodlights in the stadium suddenly caught the fire during the first innings of the match when New Zealand were batting and the match had to be halted for sometime. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the situation was controlled soon but it raises a big question on the safety of cricket stadiums in Bangladesh.

A thorough safety audit is the need of the hour as incidents like this could have devastating consequences in future. Interestingly, there was a fire in the Eden Gardens dressing room recently during the renovation work for World Cup 2023. The series between Bangladesh and New Zealand in which the incident happened in Sher-e-Bangla is a three-match ODI series and the first ODI was was washed out due to rain. In the second ODI, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first on the pitch that is quite tricky to bat on.
