A heartbreaking video of Pakistan opening batter Fakhar Zaman crying his heart out after failing in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against New Zealand in Karachi is doing the rounds across social media platforms. Uploaded by ICC last night, the video captures Zaman’s journey of returning back to the pavilion.

Unable to climb the stairs properly due to a muscular sprain, Zaman was pretty much inconsolable upon returning to the dressing room. In spite of assurances from Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, the 34-year-old player kept on crying perhaps after realizing how his strike rate of 58.53 dented Pakistan’s chances of securing a victory.

Quite unfortunate to suffer an injury on the second ball of the tournament, Zaman was in visible discomfort during a torturous 24 (41) in a 321-run chase on Wednesday. Having put on display signs of finding form before the commencement of this showpiece event, contributing in a high-scoring run-chase was part of Zaman’s forte.

Having said that, neither getting to bat in the first powerplay due to an injury nor able to find rhythm at No. 4 due to a lack of ideal movement resulted in a lacklustre innings which was one of the two main reasons behind Pakistan ending up with 260 in 47.2 overs.

Fakhar Zaman No Longer Part of Pakistan Squad

While it can be argued that Zaman cried at the realisation of being ruled out of the tournament, the development was confirmed via an official announcement yesterday.

Having lost his ODI spot post ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and T20I spot post ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Zaman appeared determined to leave a mark in the ongoing ICC event. However, with him no longer part of the Pakistani squad, making a comeback would be challenging, to say the least.

Imam-ul-Haq, a like-for-like replacement, has been added to the squad in place of Zaman. Imam, who formed a successful opening pair, Pakistan’s second-best ever, alongside Zaman between 2017-2023, will be competing with the likes of Saud Shakeel, Kamran Ghulam and Usman Khan for a spot in the Playing XI.
