WATCH: Colin de Grandhomme knocks over Ben Stokes but it's a no-ball!

Birthday boy Ben Stokes received a massive slice of luck on the third afternoon of the ongoing Lord's Test between England and New Zealand as Colin de Grandhomme was found guilty of overstepping the line before the former chopped on an innocuous-looking delivery on his stumps.

It all happened on the fourth delivery of the 27th over in England's 2nd innings when Stokes inexplicably charged down to the medium-pacer, only to inside-edge it onto his stumps.

But, as frustrated Stokes was walking back to the dressing room, the third umpire informed the on-field official that it was an illegitimate delivery as De Grandhomme had overstepped.

And, as the umpire extended his arm to signal no-ball, Lord's crowd suddenly woke up in unison as they welcomed their skipper back to the crease.

The dismissal, however, did not deter Stokes from charging down to the bowler regularly.

It was frantic stuff from the English Test skipper, and his approach was utterly out of sync with what his team demanded at the time.

If not for that no-ball, England would have sunk to 78/5 in a session where they had already lost Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow.

The home side managed to wipe out 68 runs from their target of 277 but lost two wickets in the process. However, Stokes and Joe Root survived the tricky passage of play to ensure England went into the Tea break still four down.

The birthday boy survived another close shave after the Tea break as he nearly chopped on in a similar fashion off Tim Southee after a similar shimmy down the wicket.

Although Miracle Man's luck did end when Kyle Jamieson got the better of Stokes with a short-pitched delivery, the batter went upper cutting but miscued straight into the keeper's gloves. 

Stokes' dismissal opened doors for the Blackcaps; however, Root (77*) united with Ben Foakes (9*) to take England a step closer to the win. 

At the time of writing, England had moved on to 216/5 at the end of the third day, with the home side being 61 runs away from an incredible victory.
