  • Ned V Wi Centurions Mayers Brooks Guide Wi To A 3 0 Whitewash With A 20 Run Win

NED v WI | Centurions Mayers, Brooks guide WI to a 3-0 whitewash with a 20-run win

Maiden ODI hundreds from Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks and an all-round bowling display have helped the West Indies beat the Netherlands by 20 runs and script a 3-0 series win.

Needing 309 to win, the Dutch got off to a near-perfect start as Max O'Dowd (89 off 121), and Vikramjit Singh (54 off 55) accumulated their third consecutive 50-plus stand.

The duo added 98 runs in 17.1 overs, and in the process, the Netherlands became the first associate nation to rack up three 50-plus stands in a row against a full-member.

The opening stand was eventually broken by Kyle Mayers, who knocked over Singh for a 55-ball 54.

However, O'Dowd and Musa Ahmed (42 off 42) continued to chip away, adding 66 runs for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed by Hayden Walsh Jr.

O'Dowd couldn't quite accelerate at the backend, which created a lot of pressure on the incoming batters as they had to go for their shots from the first ball.

De Leede (25 off 24) and Scott Edwards (18 off 19) scored at a run-a-ball, but the asking rate proved to be their demise as they fell to the spin duo of Akeal Hosein (2-52 in 10) and Walsh (2-54 in 10).

Logan van Beek (15 off 14) and skipper Seelaar tried their best, but it ultimately proved to be a bridge too far to scale.

Maiden ODI 100s from Mayers, Brooks guide WI to 308

Earlier, the West Indies rode on maiden ODI hundreds from the duo of Kyle Mayers (120 off 106) and Shamarh Brooks (101* off 115) to post a more than competitive total of 308/5 in their quota of 50 overs.

Unlike the previous match where the tourists' top-order fell away stunningly, the Nicholas Pooran-led unit got off to a decent start as the opening duo of Mayers and Shai Hope (24 off 43) added 58 runs in just over 11 overs.

Bas de Leede ended the partnership with the dismissal of Hope.

However, Mayers and Brooks proceeded to launch a stunning assault on the Dutch bowlers. The duo added 184 runs for the 2nd wicket- the highest by any batting pair in the country.

Mayers, who smashed as many as 7 sixes and 8 fours, brought up his maiden ODI hundred in just 96 deliveries. However, he was eventually dismissed at 120 by pacer Ryan Klein.

His dismissal triggered a collapse as Pooran (7 off 7), Brandon King (10 off 12), and Hosein (3 off 5) all perished cheaply.

However, Brooks stayed till the end to complete his maiden 100 and, along with Nkrumah Bonner (19* off 16), took the West Indies past the 300-run mark.

Brief Score:

West Indies 308/5 (50)

Kyle Mayers 120 (106), Shamarh Brooks 101* (115);

Bas de Leede 1/34 (5), Aryan Dutt 1/44 (10)

Netherlands 288 all-out (49.5)

Max O'Dowd 89 (121), Vikramjit Singh 54 (55);

Shermon Lewis 3/67 (9.5), Akeal Hosein 2/52 (10)

West Indies won by 20 runs.

Ravi Shastri comments on Dinesh Karthik's chances of making India's T20 World Cup squad

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri believes that veteran Dinesh Karthik can perform the finisher's role for the team at the T20 World Cup scheduled later this year. Karthik has recently earned a recall to the Indian side for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa on the back of his impressive performances for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter has scored 330 runs in the cash-rich league at an excellent average of 55.00 and a stunning strike rate of 183.33. Meanwhile, during an interaction on the Star Sports show 'Game Plan’, Shastri was asked if he thought DK could make it for Team India's squad for the World Cup. "You have to see from the team's point of view, what are they looking for? Do they want a keeper who will bat at the top of the order or do they want a keeper who will be the finisher? I will go for the latter. You need a keeper who will do MS Dhoni's role, let's put it that way," Shastri said on the show. The ex-Indian cricketer also stated that choosing Karthik as the second wicketkeeper in the squad would be a good choice. "There is already Rishabh Pant who can bat in the top four or five in T20 cricket but you want someone who can keep and finish a game because they aren't too many finishers now with MS (Dhoni) having quit. So I think that's where his chances are very very good," Shastri explained. However, the ‘Men in Blue’ have struggled for the finisher's position ever since legendary wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni announced his retirement. With most of India's renowned batters playing in the top order for their respective franchises in the IPL, the team has struggled to find a reliable finisher, especially with Hardik Pandya's injury concerns. However, Shastri said that DK would have to showcase his skills again in the T20Is against South Africa for him to be in the squad for the mega event. "This is his opportunity. If and when he gets an opportunity in these games, he has to do it with India colors on. We know he has got the experience, so this becomes extremely vital," he concluded. However, it will be interesting to see how many games Karthik gets in the five-match series against the South Africa team. With Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan also in the team as wicketkeeper-batters, the veteran will have to grab the limited opportunities available.
