India gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match T20I series against South Africa, winning at Trivandrum and Guwahati. With the series in the pocket, the Indian team management is looking to rest a few players, including former skipper Virat Kohli.

The final match of the series, which will be a dead rubber, will be played tomorrow at Holkar Stadium in Indore. During his unbeaten knock of 49 runs, he became the first Indian player to cross 11,000 T20-run mark.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, a source close to the team revealed that Kohli's workload and freshness mentally and physically is a big concern heading into the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Kohli has been constantly dealing with back spasms since 2012, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is willing to take no unnecessary risk after Jasprit Bumrah's mishap.

"Back-to-back matches. Will have to be careful about his workload. With the T20 World Cup starting later this month, we want Virat to be fresh mentally and physically.

He has featured regularly for India in T20I matches since the Asia Cup and with the series already won, it's better to give him a breather and someone else can be given a game ahead of him."

Since the 2022 Asia Cup, Kohli has scored 404 runs from 10 matches, including one hundred and three fifties.

Overall, the 33-year-old has played 109 T20Is for India, accumulating 3,712 runs with one ton and 33 half-centuries.
