Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma And Babar Azam Ignored As ICC Announces ODI Team Of The Year

The ICC has finally revealed the Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024. In a surprising turn of events, the team features no players from India, Australia, or England. Instead, rising stars and standout performers from other countries have take center stage, with Pakistan making a significant impact by securing three spots in the lineup.  

Charith Asalanka has been named the captain of the side, following a stellar year where he scored 605 runs in 16 ODIs, including a century and four half-centuries. His leadership and consistent performances made him an obvious choice to lead the team.  

Dynamic Openers:  Saim Ayub And Rahmanullah Gurbaz

The opening pair for the ODI XI features Pakistan’s Saim Ayub and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Saim Ayub enjoyed a breakout year, scoring 515 runs in just nine matches, including three centuries. Gurbaz was equally impressive as he made 531 runs in 11 ODIs which also include three hundreds. 

Solid Middle Order With Sri Lankan Flair

Sri Lanka dominates the middle order with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. The right handed batter was in sublime form as he made 694 runs in 12 ODIs with a strike rate of 106.40. On the other hand, Kusal Mendis accumulated 742 runs in 17 matches at an average of 53.  

Powerful And Strong Finishers

West Indies’ Sherfane Rutherford is the lone non-Asian batter in the lineup. He scored 425 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 106.20. Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai takes the all-rounder slot after contributing 417 runs with the bat, and picking up 17 wickets with a top performance of 4/18.  

The Spin Dominance 

Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga and Afghanistan’s Allah Ghazanfar form a potent spin duo. Hasaranga was sensational as he scalped 26 wickets in 10 matches. Ghazanfar had an amazing year he made significant contribution and claimed 21 wickets in 11 ODIs with a top performance of 6/26.  

Pakistan’s Dominance In The ICC ODI Team of the Year

The pace attack is led by Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf. The ace pacer continued to dazzle with the ball, as he claimed 15 wickets in six matches at an impressive average of 17.60. On the other hand, Haris Rauf secured 13 wickets in eight matches at an average of 22.4.
