The Uttarakhand High Court has issued a notice to the Union of India and Uttarakhand State Government over their progress on the ‘Khelo India’ scheme. The scheme itself was formulated by the government with an aim to encourage sports all over the country through playfield and community coaching development.

The Uttarakhand High Court, after taking cognizance of an advertisement campaign featuring Virat Kohli, issued notice to the government and also directed them to issue their response within two weeks.

Virat Kohli video prompts High Court to push Government

Earlier this week, Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal said that they came across a video on social media featuring Virat Kohli. In the advertisement campaign video, the former Indian captain can be seen urging adults to allow their neighbouring and local kids to play outdoor sports in compounds. The cricketer himself played a game of cricket with a bunch of kids, before appealing to the neighbours to not stop children from playing.

The high court bench, after stumbling upon the video, considered the cause appropriate and have subsequently decided to understand what policies the state government have formulated under their planned ‘Khelo India’ scheme thus far.

The court mentioned that engaging in outdoor sporting activities is a fundamental right for children, and denying them to play outdoors within their own compounds can lead them to becoming screen addicts.
