After basking in the glory of their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 win, Mumbai has announced its 17-member squad for the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While the big names are still on the list, one absentee that has caused a lot of discussion is Prithvi Shaw.

Shreyas Iyer to Lead Mumbai in Vijay Hazare Trophy

Meanwhile, skipper Shreyas Iyer will lead the side. Big guns like Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur are all in.

Add to that some fresh blood in Ayush Mhatre, who missed the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while representing India U19. This is his big chance, and he’ll be raring to go.

However, Ajinkya Rahane, Mumbai’s man of the moment after his stellar Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, is taking a break. The veteran smashed 469 runs at a strike rate of 164.56, top-scoring for his team with five fifties.

But with Ajinkya Rahane taking time off for personal reasons, Mumbai’s selectors have decided to focus on the here and now.

Mumbai’s squad looks full-strength for now, even without Rahane. Youngsters like Ayush Mhatre and Suryansh Shedge have a golden opportunity to step up and make their mark. And with the first three games in Ahmedabad, Mumbai won’t have to deal with travel fatigue.

Shaw & Mulani Dropped

Prithvi Shaw, once Mumbai’s golden boy, is watching from the sidelines. The opener had a torrid time in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, managing just 197 runs in 9 innings. For someone of Shaw’s calibre, those numbers just don’t cut it.

It’s not just Shaw, though. Shams Mulani, a regular all-rounder, has also been dropped. A double whammy for Mumbai’s regulars. The all-rounder, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, endured a tough Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign.

The 27-year-old leaked 187 runs in 21 overs across six matches at an economy of 8.90, with Mumbai conceding 200-plus totals thrice. With the bat, he managed just 68 runs at an average of 17.00, with a top score of 41. After being dropped during the SMAT knockouts, Mulani now finds himself out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad as well.

Mumbai’s VHT campaign begins on December 21 against Karnataka. All eyes will be on this squad as they look to make a mark without some of their main players in recent years.
