Test cricket is something that I have always wanted to play: Laura Wolvaardt

South African batter Laura Wolvaardt has termed her experience of playing Test cricket 'incredible', stating that it was her childhood dream to represent her country in red-ball cricket.

Wolvaardt was one of the nine South African cricketers who earned their maiden Test cap last week when the tourists locked horns in a one-off Test against England.

Opening the innings, Wolvaardt could only manage 16 runs each in both innings. While she admitted that she would have loved to score more, the lesson learned from facing the red ball is something she is looking to carry forward with her in the upcoming white-ball fixtures.

"It was an incredible week. Test cricket is something that I have always wanted to play since I was a little girl, so to be able to do that and debut with a whole bunch of the team was a great experience," said Laura Wolvaardt as quoted by ANI.

"It was really tough, from a cricket point of view. The red ball was very tough to face and I had some challenging innings up front. Overall, it was a great learning experience, I will learn a lot from it going forward and hopefully, it is the first of many," she added.

Heading into the ODI series, Wolvaardt feels that the work she has done on fine-tuning her technique for the Test match will keep her in good stead in the forthcoming fixtures.

"For me, the Test was all about just making sure my technique is right and try and get into strong positions. The basics will stay the same for the ODIs, so it will actually be good because I have done a bit of technical work now leading up to the ODI series, so hopefully, I will be able to time the ball well going into it," she said.

"Overall, just (getting the chance of) facing their bowlers in tough conditions, all of that will help with the ODI series. Hopefully, it will be a bit easier now with the white ball; so fingers crossed," she added.

Coming back to the Test match, the four-day affair ended with a high-scoring draw, with Marizanne Kapp (150), Nat Sciver (169*), and Alice Richards (107) chipping in with fine hundreds for their respective sides.

Both sides will lock horns in a three-match ODI series, starting in Northampton on July 11.
