In a significant development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalised South Africa for slow over rate in the third ODI against England. On Sunday, South Africa had a forgettable outing, with England swatting them aside by a massive 342-run margin in the third ODI. After the game concluded, the ICC imposed a five per cent penalty on the South African team after finding the visitors guilty of a slow over rate offence.

South African Players Fined For Slow Over Rate In 3rd ODI vs England

South Africa entered the third ODI after securing the series with two consecutive thumping victories. However, the Englishmen finally fired as a unit in the final dead-rubber, concluding the series on a high note. While Jacob Bethell and Joe Root's centuries powered them to their seventh 400-plus total in ODIs, Jofra Archer's stunning spell helped the hosts bowl South Africa out for 72 runs.

After the heavy defeat, the South Africans face another major setback, with the ICC sanctioning them for slow over rate. The visitors were found one over short of their target in the allotted time; so, the apex body penalised them as per article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

It's worth mentioning that no formal hearing was conducted, as South Africa captain Temba Bavuma accepted the sanctions.

South Africa Register 2nd Successive ODI Series Win

Under Temba Bavuma's leadership, South Africa have showcased remarkable consistency in ODI cricket of late. The Proteas pipped Australia in a three-match ODI series before edging past the Englishmen in their backyard. Thus, the South Africans are steadily evolving as a potent ODI unit and could be one of the teams to watch out for in the 2027 World Cup.
