Experienced opener Tamim Iqbal may have been ousted from the set-up in a controversial manner prior to the ICC World Cup in India but his brother Nafees Iqbal has been given the responsibility to help revive Bangladesh's fortunes following the lacklustre showings across the border.

Nafees has been reappointed manager of the Bangladesh senior men's national side ahead of the Test series at home against New Zealand after the Tigers suffered a painstaking pre-semifinal exit from the quadrennial event with just two victories in nine matches of the league phase.

Tamim's elder brother played 11 Tests and 16 ODIs for and is from a renowned cricket family in Bangladesh cricket, being the nephew of former Test cricketer Akram Khan and son of Iqbal Khan, who used to organise small cricket tournaments in Bangladesh.

Notably, Nafees was supposed to be the team manager and part of the national team support staff for the World Cup 2023 on Indian shores but had been excluded from the set-up in September as per reports at the behest of skipper Shakib Al Hasan.

However, with Shakib confirming his unavailability for the two-match Test series against the BlackCaps and new skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto taking over the leadership mantle, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reappointed Nafees for the team manager's position two months later.

Nafees was a specialist batter in his playing days for Bangladesh during their infant stage as a Test playing nation and turned to coaching after calling it quits at the international stage.

The experienced head is only 38 years old and tuned with the requirements of modern-day cricket, which makes him integral to the Bangladeshi backroom staff. Nafees has previously played the role of a manager for Bangladesh A side and was a coach of Khelaghar in the Dhaka Premier League.

The two-Test rubber against New Zealand will be Bangladesh's first series in the 2023-25 cycle of the World Test Championship with matches scheduled in Sylhet and Dhaka from November 28 and December 6, respectively.
