In a huge blow to the Bangladesh Cricket Team, Tamim Iqbal has stepped down as Bangladesh captain. He has also been ruled out of Asia Cup 2023 as well due to back injury. The champion batter has also stepped down as the captain of the ODI team with immediate effect.

The development comes after a month after Tamim abruptly announced his retirement from international cricket, only to reverse it 24 hours later on the 'request' of the country's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Tamim has been suffering from his recurring back issues for some time now. He recently returned from England after seeking medical advice on the same.

Recently, Bangladesh Cricket Board chairman Nazmul Hasan had admitted that if Tamim does not get fit in time for the Asia Cup, then vice-captain Litton Das will lead the Tigers in the continental tournament. However, with Tamim stepping down now, Litton Das will most likely be appointed as a full-time ODI skipper.

Bangladesh will open their Asia Cup 2023 campaign against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on March 31. The Tigers have been clubbed alongside Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in what is effectively a 'group of death'.

Meanwhile, the BCB is hopeful that Tamim will be fit for the upcoming ODI series against the visiting New Zealand team.
