Sussex and Leicestershire play out a draw; rain plays spoilsport yet again

The Day 4 of the County Championship 2022 fixture between Sussex and Leicestershire ended as a draw after the former could not put enough pressure on the home team, with rain playing spoilsport.

Leicestershire began the day on 195/5 with Rishi Patel and Harry Swindells at the crease. However, the Foxes were put in pressure with the wicket of Patel, who could add only 1 to his overnight score and was dismissed for a score of 68 off 209, comprising 7 fours and 1 six.

A few overs later, Ben Mike tried to hit a boundary off the covers but gave a catching opportunity to Cheteshwar Pujara, who took a fine catch. With the team's score at 209/7, Leicester players were struggling to spend enough time at the crease and were on the verge of loss.

But, the arrival of experienced Callum Parkinson certainly changed the equation of the match, as he tried to keep composure and steer the team with Swindells. The form of Parkinson helped the wicket-keeper gain confidence, as the duo managed to play out the first session.

Then the rain showers saw a total of 27 overs being wasted, which helped the cause of the Foxes. In the 128th over of the innings, Swindells was dismissed for a score of 57, similarly to Mike in the cover position.

A couple of overs later, Parkinson was dismissed, but Chris Wright and Beuran Hendricks remained unbeaten on 5 and 6 at the end of the day's play.

Sussex failed to end their drought of no wins in their last 17 County Championship matches but secured 15 points due to the lead in the first innings, whereas Leicestershire returned with 11 points. Both the teams are still winless in 6 appearances this season.

In their next league game, Leicestershire will be against Worcestershire at New Road on May 19. On the other hand, Sussex will return on 12 June to face Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.
