On Thursday, May 9, Sri Lanka named their squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, led by all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. The team will compete in the tournament set to take place in West Indies and the USA from June 1.

Hasaranga, who was appointed Sri Lanka's T20I captain in December 2023, will be supported by vice-captain Charith Asalanka. The experienced Angelo Mathews, a veteran of six T20 World Cups, adds further depth and leadership to the side.

Sri Lanka has focused on building a strong, experienced squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Positioned in a challenging group alongside Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal, and South Africa, Sri Lanka will rely on their experienced core and all-round capabilities to counter the group stages and make a deep run in the tournament.

With strong all-rounders and a balanced bowling attack, Sri Lanka will aim to establish themselves as one of the tournament favourites and potentially reclaim the T20 World Cup title they last won in 2014.

Sri Lanka’s T20 Coach: Chris Silverwood

Chris Silverwood is a former England cricketer and the current head coach of the Sri Lankan team. His coaching trajectory has been marked by notable successes and challenges.

In October 2019, Silverwood played the role of head coach of the England men's cricket team, following Trevor Bayliss' departure. He also took on the role of head of selectors in April 2021, combining both responsibilities.

However, Silverwood's tenure with England was marred by criticism during the 2021-22 Ashes series. England's 4-0 defeat in the series eventually led to Silverwood leaving his role as head coach in February 2022.

In April 2022, Silverwood was appointed head coach of the Sri Lankan cricket team on a two-year contract and he led them to a win in Asia Cup that year. His ability to manage high-stakes tournaments and deliver consistent performances makes him a valuable asset for Sri Lanka as they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024.
