Sri Lanka's campaign in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 has dealt a severe blow as their key pacer, Dushmantha Chameera, has been ruled out of the tournament due to an unfortunate injury sustained during a training session.

Blow for Sri Lanka as Dushmantha Chameera sidelined

The Event Technical Committee, responsible for overseeing the event, has approved the replacement of Chameera by Dilshan Madushanka.

Chameera's absence is a major setback for the Lankans, particularly considering his instrumental role in their white-ball bowling attack over the past few years. With an impressive tally of 50 wickets in 44 One Day Internationals (ODIs).

The right-arm quick's bowling has been a vital asset for the Sri Lankan team. However, his inability to recover in time has forced him to return to Sri Lanka for intensive rehabilitation, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the Super Six stage.

The loss of Chameera comes at a crucial juncture in the tournament, where Sri Lanka is eyeing one of the highly coveted two qualification spots available. As the top-ranked side in the ongoing Qualifier, the Lankans have lived up to their pre-tournament expectations by notching up an impressive run of four consecutive victories in the group stage. This strong start has positioned them favourably in their quest to secure a place in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

It is worth mentioning that the replacement of a player in the squad entails formal approval of the Event Technical Committee. The committee, chaired by Chris Tetley, the ICC Head of Events, also includes Sarah Edgar, an ICC Representative, and Hamilton Masakadza, the Host Tournament Director.

The committee is further augmented by Dirk Viljoen, the Host Nominee, along with independent members Pommie Mbangwa and Natalie Germanos. Gurjit Singh, entrusted with managing committee affairs, completes the roster of this influential panel.
