Sophie Devine to continue playing for Perth Scorchers in WBBL

New Zealand’s decorated all-rounder Sophie Devine has decided to continue her stint with the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) franchise Perth Scorchers. Devine has been associated with the team for the past two seasons, and this will be her third time in the orange jersey.

It was an easy decision for the all-rounder as she has experienced a lot of memorable moments with the Scorchers. Under her leadership, the team won its first T20 cup last year. Perth Scorchers defeated Adelaide Strikers in the final by 12 runs.

Speaking about her performance, it was a golden year for Sophie. The all-rounder formed a part of the team of the tournament for WBBL 07. She smacked 442 runs last season at an average of 34.

In 14 games, the New Zealander hit one century and two half-centuries. She also scalped ten wickets at an average of 19.60. Devine mentioned that it was an easy choice for her to renew her contract. The 32-year-old is also confident in creating the same magic this time.

“It was a pretty easy choice for me to come back to the mighty orange. The last two years have been pretty special. Winning the title last year for the first time in the club’s history is certainly motivation for me to grow something special with this group,”

“We’ve got loads of experience, we’ve got the big names like Beth Mooney and Alana King, and we can mix in the local players like Chloe Piparo and Matilda Carmichael, who played really nicely last year,”

We’ve got such a talented group which makes for a really exciting balance, and I think getting that right is crucial to success. You can’t just rely on one or two people, it takes a full squad, and that’s what we showed last year,” Sophie Devine said on Monday.

Kade Harvey, Western Australia Cricket’s general manager, was also all praises for the New Zealand all-rounder. Kade hailed Sophie as one of the most potent women cricketers at the moment. The manager seemed highly impressed with Sophie's impact at Perth Scorchers with her leadership and cricket skills.

“The positive impact she had while captaining Perth to its first WBBL title cannot be overstated. She is one of world cricket’s most powerful ball-strikers, and her leadership on and off the field has been exceptional ever since she arrived at the club,” Kade Harvey stated.
