IPL 2022 sets a new record with 1000 sixes, breaks most maximums record in a season

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League has seen several records getting shattered in what has been an exciting two months of T20 cricket.

From Virat Kohli's 7000 runs for a single franchise to Shikhar Dhawan's most fours in the history of the tournament, we have witnessed it all. However, for the first time in the history of the cash-rich league, a total of 1000 sixes have been hit.

The final league encounter between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings may have been a dead rubber, but it helped the league set a new record. The Kings' power-hitting batter Liam Livingstone, who has a record of smashing the longest six in the IPL 2022, smacked the 1000th six of the tournament in the 15th over bowled by Romario Shepherd.

The previous record for the most number of maximums was made in 2018 when 872 sixes were struck from 60 matches.

Most Number of sixes in an IPL season:

2018 - 872 sixes from 60 matches

2019 - 784 sixes from 60 matches

2020 - 734 sixes from 60 matches

2012 - 732 sixes from 75 matches

2014 - 714 sixes from 60 matches

Among the 1000 sixes this year, Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals have deposited the ball in the stands for the most number of the time with 116, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders with 113 sixes.

Punjab Kings are third in the tally with 109 sixes. Surprisingly, the league leaders Gujarat Titans have struck the least number of sixes with just 69 to their name, while Royal Challengers Bangalore, with a star-studded batting line-up, is the second last in the list with just 86 maximums to their credit.
