The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced Lanka T10, a 10-over competition that will have its inaugural edition played out in December this year. All matches will be held in Colombo and the cricket board is also contemplating launching an adjacent women’s T10 league at the same time.

By taking up the initiative, Sri Lanka has become only the third Test-playing nation to approve a T10 League after Zimbabwe’s Zim-Afro competition and West Indies’ The 6ixty.

SLC’s Lanka T10 to commence on December 12

As per a media release from SLC, the inaugural season of Lanka T10 will be played between December 12 and December 23, with all matches taking place in Colombo. As many as six teams will be participating in the tournament, all to be named after iconic Sri Lankan cities.

The Lanka T10 will be a joint venture between SLC and T Ten Global Sports Management Group. Interestingly, the T Ten Global group also organizes Abu Dhabi T10, Zim-Afro T10, and US Master T10 events.

SLC President Mr. Shammi Silva has expressed his excitement over the prospects of launching the Lanka T10 League with a T10 veteran group. He said:

“Cricket has been continuing to evolve, and T10 is the latest form to enter the fray and is becoming a popular format in the game. We are delighted to be a part of this newer venture and are confident that the initial version of Lanka T10 will be a success story.”

As of now, the cricket board is also considering launching a women’s version of the T10 league, intended to run alongside the men’s competition, much like how The 6ixty operates in the Caribbean.

For the inaugural men’s league, the player auction is set to take place on November 10. The players’ registrations for the same are already underway until its closing on November 5.
