Indian opener Shubman Gill, who missed the first game of World Cup 2023 against Australia, is reportedly making a swift recovery in Chennai.

Although there has been no official statement from the BCCI, a recent report from News18 suggests Gill is showing promising signs of recovery and could soon rejoin the Indian squad for the World Cup.

While the entire team, including captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid, have commented on Gill's improving health, specific details about his condition remain under wraps. Gill did not accompany the team to Delhi for their next game against Afghanistan, a decision backed by medical recommendations.

The News18 report, citing an inside source, stated that Gill's current health condition has improved around "70-80% recovered". The decision to keep him in Chennai was reportedly to prevent any disruptions in his recovery process. The source explained that Gill's health and recovery were prioritized over the potential inconvenience of having him travel to Delhi and then possibly not play.

“Shubman Gill hasn’t travelled with the team because the doctor treating him is yet to give the necessary clearances. With him being touch and go for the Afghanistan game, it wasn’t an ideal situation to make him travel all the way to Delhi only to make him sit in a different hotel room. It was felt that keeping him in Chennai wouldn’t interrupt the recovery and allow him the required rest,” said the source.

The source further stated that despite his rapid recovery, the exact date of Gill's return remains uncertain. He added that the underlying ailment, believed to be dengue, has drained him considerably. Doctors are ensuring he remains hydrated and is receiving consistent glucose doses.

“It’s difficult to put a date against the return at this stage. Dengue sucks a lot of energy out of the system, that’s why the doctor is keeping him hydrated with a regular dosage of glucose. The moment he gets clearance, the next step would be to see how the body reacts after intense physical activity,” added the source.

For now, fans and the cricket community can only wait and hope for Gill's speedy return to India’s World Cup squad.
