Indian opener Shubman Gill has been admitted to a Chennai hospital following a significant drop in his platelet count due to dengue. This development casts a shadow over his availability for the much-anticipated World Cup 2023 match against Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.

Gill's dengue makes him uncertain for Pakistan clash

Due to the illness, Gill had previously missed India's opening game of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia, held in Chennai. The young batter has also been ruled out of the subsequent fixture against Afghanistan, set to take place in Delhi on October 11. Post the Australia match, Gill remained in Chennai, closely monitored by the medical team.

The prodigious batter contracted dengue shortly after arriving in Chennai and has been under the weather for nearly a week.

After it was confirmed that he will not be part of the lineup for the match against Afghanistan, Gill is also likely to miss the game against Pakistan.

While speaking to PTI, a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed that Gill had been receiving medical care in the team's hotel in Chennai.

The decision to hospitalize him was taken after his platelet count dipped to 70,000, considering that hospitalization is typically recommended for dengue patients when their platelet count goes below 100,000.

The source also mentioned that once his platelet count surpasses 100,000, Gill would be on his way to recovery and would be discharged from the hospital.

"Shubman Gill was on drip at the Chennai team hotel for the last couple of days. However his platelet count dropped to 70,000 and as it is a case with dengue patients, once the count is below 100,000, you are admitted to a medical facility as a precautionary measure. Once the count again goes above 100,000, he would be discharged," said the source.
