Battling past a challenging injury phase, Indian batter, Shreyas Iyer, with a spectacular score of 199 during a practice match at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) made his come to the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2023.

This commendable knock ensured his selection in the Asia Cup squad, following a hiatus due to a debilitating back injury which saw him absent from vital fixtures like IPL 2023 and the World Test Championship 2023 final.

Iyer's performance in the practice game at NCA propelled him back to the Indian squad

The announcement of the team for the Asia Cup was initially postponed, as the selectors carefully assessed the fitness conditions of key players, Iyer and KL Rahul. They aimed to ensure that the players were not only fit but in prime form to face the rigours of international cricket.

It was at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore where Iyer proved his return to form and full fitness. His brilliant knock was complemented by his determination in the field, where he committed to a full 50-over match without showing any signs of discomfort.

As reported by The Times of India, an insider at the BCCI revealed that Iyer displayed an impressive performance at the NCA where he managed to score 199 runs in a practice match and aggressively faced the bowlers.

Additionally, in a bid to provide the selectors with more confidence in his physical condition, he actively fielded for the entirety of the 50-over match. These events took place a few days ago at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

“Iyer smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held in Bangalore 3-4 days back,” said the source.

The source also mentioned that Iyer has been focused on his recovery for the past two months while stationed at the NCA in Bangalore which proved beneficial for him.

“For the past two months, he has been stationed at the NCA in Bangalore, focusing on his recovery. It's all come together nicely for him,” added the source.
