As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 prepares for its final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, all eyes are not only on the championship trophy but also on a potentially historic individual milestone. Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings, is on the cusp of breaking the record for most sixes by an Indian batter in a single IPL season a feat that could be sealed tonight.
Shreyas Iyer Eyes Indian Six-Hitting Record
Shreyas Iyer has smashed 39 sixes in 16 matches this season. This puts him just three sixes short of Abhishek Sharma’s record of 42 sixes, set in IPL 2024. Abhishek had broken Virat Kohli’s long-standing mark of 38 sixes from the 2016 season, but his stay at the top could be brief if Iyer continues his current form in the final.
The PBKS skipper has not only led from the front with his six-hitting, but also done so with remarkable consistency and aggression. His strike rate of 175.80 is the highest among all players who have scored over 600 runs in IPL 2025.
Beyond the Indian record, Shreyas Iyer is also in hot pursuit of the overall season-best tally of 40 sixes, currently held by Nicholas Pooran. A single maximum in tonight's final will see Iyer match Pooran, while two sixes will see him overtake the West Indian to become the top six-hitter of IPL 2025.
The IPL has long been a breeding ground for six-hitting legends. Chris Gayle, the undisputed king of maximums, remains the only player to smash 50 sixes in a season twice doing so in 2012 and 2013 for RCB.

For Punjab Kings, this is just their second appearance in an IPL final, and under Iyer’s leadership, they have been a side that looks commendable this year.
