Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer belted a hapless South African attack in Johannesburg on his way to scoring a match-winning half-century in the first ODI of their three-match series

The 29-year-old pumped out 52 runs off just 45 balls and formed an 88-run partnership for the second wicket with fellow half-centurion and debutant Sai Sudharsan.

Iyer stroked six boundaries and a six during his run-chase masterclass to make light work of South Africa’s already below-par 116-run total. Interestingly, at one stage, the right-hander sent his bat flying towards the square leg region after losing his grip while facing Proteas speedster Nandre Burger early in his innings.

Batting at number three, Shreyas Iyer arrived to the crease in the fourth over of the Indian run-chase following the early dismissal of Ruturaj Gaikwad.

While facing South African fast bowler Nandre Burger in the ninth over of the innings, the right-hander attempted to play a scorching pull shot, only to have his bat slipped out of his hands. As it turned out, the bat landed around the square leg region near the umpire.

Regardless, Shreyas Iyer’s 52-run knock marked the 18th half-century of his ODI career, and sustained his sublime white-ball batting form following his 530-run campaign at the 2023 World Cup last month.

The cricketer will now turn up for Team India in the second ODI of their three-match series against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on December 19. The two teams will subsequently travel to Paarl for a potential decider on December 21.

Shreyas Iyer is also selected in India’s 16-player squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against the hosts, set to commence from December 26 onwards in Centurion.
